Add comfort and flair to a favorite chair

Making these pillows couldn’t be simpler, thanks to the button opening of the shirt.

YOU'LL NEED:

  • Ruler
  • Pillow insert
  • Paper (any type is fine, even newsprint)
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Ironing board
  • Plaid button-front shirt
  • Chalk
  • Pinking shears
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread

Snowflake pillow:

Christmas tree pillow:

  • Christmas tree, trunk and star templates
  • Printer and plain white paper
  • Adhesive-backed felt in green, brown and yellow (available at craft stores)
  • ½ yard narrow red ribbon
  • Hot-glue gun

1. Add 1" to length and width of pillow insert and make a paper template that size. Cut out.

2. Iron shirt. Place template on front of shirt, centering it over buttons. Consider whether you want buttons to run horizontally or vertically and whether you want to include pockets. Adjust until you find exact position you want, then trace around template with chalk. Cut out.

3. Position template on back of shirt, making sure it is aligned properly so plaid is straight. Trace around template with chalk. Cut out.

4. Pin front and back to each other, wrong sides facing out. Sew pieces together, leaving a ½" selvage. Unbutton shirt and turn right side out.

5. Place insert in pillowcase and button to close.
