Reach for the stars with this dazzling kid's Halloween costume
Don't be intimidated to make homemade Halloween costumes -- with this DIY solar system costume, creating a unique outfit for your little one doesn't have to be rocket science! Just follow these step-by-step instructions: many of the supplies can already be found around your home.
Trim nine skewers to graduated lengths so that planets will be orbiting the sun at different heights.
Puncture the styrofoam planets with the skewers, using the shortest stick to represent the closest planet to the sun. Place each one into a collander hole and reinforce with hot glue.
To make rocket trick-or-treat "bag", use a serrated knife to cut an opening just below the plastic bottle neck -- don't cut all the way through. Cut lengths of red, yellow, and orange crepe paper for "flames". Tape or glue onto bottom of soda bottle. Cut two small holes in the bottle and thread string through. Tie knots on the inside to secure. Cover rocket with Mylar or tin foil. Glue or tape seams to secure.
