  • Large spoon
  • Newspaper or drop cloth
  • Black spray paint
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • 1¼" and ¾" hole punches (optional)
  • 1 sheet each green, black and orange construction paper or card stock

  • Printer and plain white paper
  • Ear templates (download at
  • 1 sheet stiff black felt
  • White chalk
  • Sharp knife
  • 3 6" wooden skewers
  • Hot-glue gun
  • White floral wire Giant chenille pipe cleaner (at Michaels craft store)
  • ½"-wide orange ribbon and 1/8"-wide orange ribbon, each 1' long

Step 1. Cut or break stems off all pumpkins. Cut a 3" circle from top of 1 medium pumpkin. Scoop out pulp with spoon. Use this pumpkin for large cat’s head. (Other pumpkins do not need to be hollowed out.) Working over newspaper or drop cloth in a well-ventilated area, spray-paint pumpkins black. Turn heads (hollowed pumpkin and small pumpkin) upside down.

Step 2. FOR EYES: Using scissors or hole punches, cut 2 1¼"-diameter circles (for large cat) and 2 ¾"-diameter circles (for small cat) out of green construction paper or card stock. To make pupils, cut 2 1¼"-long ovals (for large cat) and 2 ¾"-long Create a cute critter that’s the cat’s meow Set this pair of fun felines on a windowsill and let them watch over the house. ovals (for small cat) with pointy ends out of black construction paper or card stock. Use craft glue to adhere black ovals to green circles, then glue eyes to heads.

Step 3. FOR NOSES: Cut 2 triangles out of orange construction paper or card stock. For large cat, sides of triangle should be 1" long; for small cat, sides should be ½" long. Glue noses to heads.

Step 4. FOR EARS: Print out ear templates for large and small cats and cut out with scissors. Place templates on stiff black felt, trace around each template twice and cut out ears with scissors. Using a sharp knife, carve 2 slots in each head for ear tabs. Inserts ears into heads.

Step 5. Assemble cats. For large cat, cut 2 wooden skewers to 5" and insert into bottom of hollow head on either side of hole. Center head on top of large pumpkin, pushing skewers partway down into large pumpkin. Make a bead of hot glue on top of large pumpkin, then push skewers all the way down. For small cat, break a skewer in half, insert both pieces into bottom of head and continue as with large cat, using second medium pumpkin for body.

Step 6. FOR WHISKERS: Using scissors, cut 6 4"-long pieces of white floral wire for large cat and 6 2"-long pieces for small cat. Glue whiskers to heads, 3 on each side of nose. Crinkle whiskers with your fingers.

Step 7. FOR TAILS: Cut a 14" length of pipe cleaner and bend with your fingers. Glue to back of large cat’s body. For small cat, use a 12" length.

Step 8. FOR COLLARS: Wrap ½"-wide ribbon around neck of large cat and secure in back with a drop of hot glue. For small cat, repeat with 1/8"-wide ribbon.
