Raid the hardware store to give three gourds a charming nuts-and-bolts makeover.

You'll need:

  • Scissors
  • 2 pieces brown felt and 1 piece black felt
  • Empty 6-oz. can tomato paste,cleaned
  • White chalk
  • Hot-glue gun
  • Printer and plain white paper
  • Brim template (download at allyou.com/pumpkin-hat)
  • Ruler
  • Scrapbook or plastic flower
  • Green pipe cleaner
  • 3 pumpkins in graduated sizes
  • Serrated knife
  • Large spoon (optional)
  • Carving knife (optional)
  • 2 doorknobs
  • -6 or 7 cabinet knobs or washers
  • 3 drawer pulls
  • 3 LED candles (optional; funkins.com)
  •

For Hat:

Step 1. Use scissors to cut a rectangle out of brown felt, as tall as tomato-paste can and long enough to wrap all the way around it. Use base of can to trace a circle on brown felt; cut out circle and adhere to top of can with hot glue. Wrap felt rectangle around can and adhere with hot glue. Print and cut out brim template. Place template on brown felt and cut out. Use hot-glue gun to attach covered can to brim. For band, cut a 1" x 8" strip of black felt, wrap around hat; glue into place. Glue flower to pipe cleaner and tuck into hat band.

Step 2. Cut stems off pumpkins with serrated knife. If you want to illuminate the pumpkins from within, carve a hole in top and use a large spoon to remove seeds and pulp; then carve a triangular nose. Otherwise, leave pumpkins whole.

For Faces:

Step 1. Glue hardware to pumpkins. For ears, use doorknobs; for eyes, use cabinet knobs or washers mounted on circles cut from black felt; for mouths, use drawer pulls; and for noses, either use a cabinet knob or carve out a triangle (see Step 2). If using LED candles, place them in pumpkinsPlace pumpkin in vessel and top with lid. Use glue dots to help keep lid from sliding.

Step 2. Stack pumpkins. Set largest pumpkin on ground or other surface, then use hot glue to attach next largest pumpkin on top. Glue third pumpkin on top, then glue on felt hat.
