No need to hire a professional! Learn how to paint your home with these easy-to-follow tips.
WITH A BRUSH
Use a nylon brush for latex, a natural-bristle brush for oil. Dip the bristles only about halfway into the paint (any deeper and the brush is likely to become stiff and hard to clean). Wipe both sides on the edge of the can to remove excess paint, then brush the surface with long, even strokes that follow the grain (if you’re painting wood). When the results become streaky or mottled, it’s time to dip again.
WITH A ROLLER
Use a 4-inch-wide mini roller with a 1-inch diameter. Pour paint into a small tray, then roll the pad in it until fully loaded but not dripping. Scrape the roller on edge of tray to remove excess paint. Roll paint onto the surface, using light-to-medium pressure, overlapping the edge of each stroke slightly.
WITH A SPRAY CAN
Hold the nozzle about 10 inches from the surface. Zigzag back and forth, in a slow, consistent pace in the direction of the grain (for wood or wicker). Overlap each pass slightly.
