Jazz up a classic side chair by painting and distressing the frame, then re-covering the seat in an eye-catching pattern. It's a fun, easy project that doesn't require any sewing. Choose a sturdy, slightly stretchy cotton, wool or silk fabric, gather a few basic tools and materials and set aside an afternoon―you'll be sitting pretty in no time!

  • 120- and 220-grit sandpaper
  • Sanding block
  • Steel wool
  • Tack cloth
  • Primer
  • Paint
  • 1" and 2" brushes
  • Stir stick
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  • 1"-thick foam
  • Batting
  • Fabric
  • Staple gun
  • Felt
  • Polyurethane (optional)
