HOW TO: Drive away pests the natural way
Try these chemical-free tips for a healthier harvest.
- Visit your pantry. Bury paper cups (cut down to about 1-inch tall) so their lip is level with the soil, and fill them with beer. Or toss coffee grounds around infested areas.
- Use smell. Many pests don't like fragrant herbs such as mint, garlic and basil. Mix some of them with the rest of your plants.
- Make noise. Hang aluminum cans around and in your garden.
- Stick it to 'em. To ward off cutworms, push small sticks into the soil, right up against the seedling stems. Toothpicks, Popsicle sticks, straws and twigs all work.
- Make a safe insecticide. Let a bar of Ivory soap sit in 2 cups of water overnight. Then remove the remaining soap, put the mixture in a spray bottle with ¼ cup of corn oil, shake and apply to infested leaves.
