8. Rent (don’t buy) graphing calculators

Before you buy a pricey graphing calculator for your child’s pre-calculus class, call your school. Many schools offer calculator rental programs so you don’t have to pay the full amount. But make sure you know the rental fee – often it’s best to scan eBay, Amazon or Craigslist for better deals. If your school doesn’t have a program and you still want to rent, check out graphtor.com, where you can rent various models of Texas Instruments calculators for as low as $11 a month.
