The economic downturn has forced everyone to seek new ways to pinch pennies. To find out how people were faring, All You.com and coupon site Shortcuts.com created a survey to look at how consumer spending habits have changed. Results showed that people are not making major shifts but rather focusing on small but meaningful lifestyle changes to save money.

Make thrift a priority. Even though it’s tough, saving money is a top goal for the 5,877 respondents. Fifty-seven percent would prefer to save $50 each week, compared to 31 percent who wanted to drop a clothing size, have more sex (6 percent) or gain another hour in their day (6 percent).

Follow simple strategies. Despite the weakened economy, most respondents said they were not drastically adjusting their buying or spending habits. For example, only 2 percent of those surveyed said they now drive less due to the economy. However, most are making many small cuts to save money. Sixty-four percent of respondents said they have stopped dining out as much, and 71 percent said they now clip coupons.

Overcome roadblocks. Not everyone finds trimming expenses easy, however. Twenty-two percent of respondents said they have a hard time sticking to a budget, and many cited other economic woes that prevent them from saving. When they see results, however, it’s empowering: The survey showed that more women (45 percent) feel better when they slash grocery costs, versus sticking to an exercise regimen (24 percent), for example.
