How to Travel for Free

Grab your kids and head out on a "give a little, get a lot" trip.

Grow Your Own Food
Through World Wide Opportunities, you and your family can work on an organic farm in exchange for room and board. Search opportunities all over the world at wwoof.org. As you scan the options, remember that farms described as "family run" are more likely to accept children as volunteers.

Go on an Adventure
Pick a volunteer project in the United States or abroad at workaway. info—like wilderness tourism or teaching—and you'll snag free food and housing in exchange for helping out. There's no minimum age to volunteer; when you find a project you like, ask the host if it's appropriate to bring kids along.

Go Camping
Have children ages 14 or older? Bring them along to assist with maintenance of the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs from Mexico to Canada, and receive free meals and campsites while you're there. Visit pcta.org for more information.
