How to Make House Guests Feel At Home

Consider providing your guests with these amenities during their stay.

Providing these basic items for your houseguests will go a long way in their eyes:

  • A set of keys
  • A 3" x 5" card with your address, home phone and cell phone numbers that guests can keep with them
  • A list of essential details about the neighborhood (for example, the nearest 24-hour pharmacy, house of worship and animal hospital) and emergency contacts (friends and neighbors)
  • Local magazines that cover nearby activities or attractions
  • An area map
  • A guidebook to your town
  • A 100-watt reading lamp, perferably near the bed
  • Bottles of water
  • A box of tissues
  • A wastebasket
  • An iron
  • A night-light
  • Extra blankets and pillows (some soft, some medium-firm)
  • A working alarm clock or clock radio

Go the extra mile by providing visitors with the little extras that count:

  • Books you've read that you're happy to have visitors take home
  • A folding luggage rack so a suitcase can rest somewhere other than on the bed or floor (bamboo luggage rack, $75; stacksandstacks.com for similar)
  • A disposable camera
  • An extra chair
  • Puzzle books, games or toys for kids
  • A lint roller
  • A small box for safety pins
  • A vase of fresh flowers
