Struggling to keep up with daily tasks? Learn how to simply your life while keeping your household running smoothly.
Cut down on laundry piles and eliminate small, water-wasting loads. Give each family member two laundry baskets. Keep one in their bedroom for dirty clothes, and the other in the laundry room for clean. As clothes come out of the dryer, fold and sort into each person’s basket. Every other day, switch bins so that the dirty items make it into the wash and the clean ones are put away in a timely fashion.
Keep personal care items―hair brushes, deodorant, tooth brushes, toothpaste and makeup―together by providing everyone with their own cosmetic bag with handles. Install wall hooks to hang them for easy access.
Establish an area for cell phones, PDAs and MP3 players so everyone will always know where to find their device. And, with a centralized place to plug in, no one will have dead batteries.
Stick a magnetic notepad on the fridge so you can keep a running grocery list. Encourage family members to write down items as they run out. Mount an envelope nearby for coupons. When you’re ready to shop, you not only know what you need to buy, you also have all the coupons on hand.
Putting together outfits ahead of time makes getting ready in the mornings easier for the both of you. Group ensembles on hangers in the closet so they can be easily found during the morning rush.
Use a kitchen timer to keep your kids on track in the shower, while doing homework or when they’re getting ready for soccer practice.
Eliminate the pile of stuff that seems to grow next to the door. Provide each family member with his or her own cubby to hold shoes and a lunchbox, plus a hook for a backpack and jacket. No space for this solution? Find other nooks and crannies near the front door to hang a hook, or stow a bin behind the front door or inside the garage.
