Help a stray dog or cat

Follow these steps if you see a homeless or injured animal

Stand back. If the animal is scared or hurt, it may feel threatened and scratch or bite you if you try to touch it. Unless you’re experienced in animal rescue, don’t try to capture it.

Call the local police or animal-control agency. If you take the animal to a vet and no owner is found, you may have to pay for care. Instead, call the authorities.

Look into adoption. If you want to keep the dog or cat, ask animal control if local laws require you to pay for the license and ID tag or the vaccinations for your new pet.
