Dawn Stammers, 38, of Goshen, N.H., once weighed 300 pounds and hated the idea of going to the gym. But by working out at home on an exercise machine, she lost 150 pounds.
Three years ago, Dawn’s husband at the time asked her to go on a cruise with him. “We had never had a honeymoon, but I said no because of the way I looked,” Dawn says. At that point, she weighed 300 pounds and was drinking about four cans of soda every day. “I was so tired of people staring at me,” she says, “but I didn’t know what to do.”
Spurred by the idea of a cruise, she bought a Bowflex TreadClimber. “I knew I wouldn’t go to a gym,” she says, “because I was so uncomfortable exercising in front of other people.” At first, the TreadClimber simply sat and collected dust. Finally, Dawn decided to give it a try. “It kicked my butt the first time, but I kept going,” she says. “After a month, I was using it three times a week. Eventually I was on it once—and sometimes twice—a day.” Within 18 months, she had lost 150 pounds. Eating more lean meats, salads and fruit helped, too. “I’ve gained a few pounds, but I’m more relaxed about it now because I know I can lose the weight. I’ve done it once, and I can do it again.”
