Make sure to keep a first-aid kit in your house and one in your car; here’s what you’ll want to have in there:

  •  A bar of soap and a small, unopened bottle of water. Plain soap is best for cleaning out most cuts and scrapes.
  •  Adhesive tape, gauze pads, Steri-Strips and Band-Aids, which can help cover small wounds, like blisters.
  •  Antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin.
  •  An Ace bandage and an “instant” ice pack for sprains.
  •  Insect repellent to prevent bug bites as well as 1 percent hydrocortisone cream, like Cortizone 10, to treat them.
  •  Aloe vera gel to relieve sunburn; broad spectrum sunscreen (at least SPF 30) to avoid burns.
  •  A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication, like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), to ease aches or sunburn pain.
  •  Benadryl (pills withstand heat better than liquid) to take the itch out of hives and other minor allergic reactions.
  •  Tweezers for removing splinters and ticks.
