'This dog chose us'
"Lacey, a Lab mix, showed up on my porch one day and never left. I called all the local dog shelters, put ads on Craigslist and posted fliers around town. After three days of radio silence, we took her to the vet to make sure she wasn't carrying any diseases. It turns out she was heartworm-positive, not spayed and covered with ticks and fleas. We knew that if we chose to call animal control to come get her, she might have been put to sleep because of her health problems. But she was only about a year old and such a cheerful dog—we couldn't let that happen! So we made the decision to keep her and have her all fixed up. Now, almost four years later, she is my shadow. Lacey loves car rides with me; it doesn't matter where we go as long as her head is out the window. She is filled with pure love."
