Identity theft is notoriously difficult to guard against. But you can limit your chances of becoming a victim by watching out for these surprisingly dangerous scenarios.
When downloading apps
Watch out for: Some apps unleash malware that can steal your contacts’ info, track your whereabouts, record phone conversations and read your e-mail.
How to protect yourself:
• Before you download any app, Google it and check for complaints.
• Look up the program’s developer (usually on the app’s download page) and be wary of any that have sketchy reviews or don’t have a legit Facebook or Twitter page or any contact info listed.
• Think twice about a free version of a buzzworthy app you’d normally have to pay for; it’s probably a fake.
