Rich in water content, melons such as cantaloupe, honeydew and watermelon, are a great way to add volume to a meal (or snack!) without packing on extra calories. Plus, all three contain potassium, which guards against high blood pressure.
Buying and Storing: Melons should seem heavy for their size, and some varieties, like cantaloupe, are fragrant. Store whole at room temperature for up to four days. After you've cut the melon into slices of cubes, store in a covered container in the refrigerator.
Serving: These fruits are a fantastic juicy snack raw, or tossed over a green summer salad. You can make a simple but impressive granita by tossing melon into a blender with a little sugar and lime juice. Blend, then freeze until slushy, stirring occasionally.
