Each one of our Snack Stars had to meet the following four standards:
• It had to hit our nutritional benchmarks. Fewer than 250 calories per serving, 0 grams per serving of trans fat and 480 milligrams sodium or less per serving.
• It had to be healthy on a number of levels. In addition to checking all the boxes at left, each winner had to supply 10 percent or more of the daily requirement of at least one major nutrient--such as protein, fiber, vitamin C or iron--per serving. Bonus points went to organic choices.
• It couldn't have any junky ingredients. We aimed to nix anything made with high-fructose corn syrup, lots of added sugar, fake sweeteners, partially hydrogenated oils or anything that sounded like part of a science projext.
• You have to be able to find it without a hassle.You're likely to spot nearly three quarters of these snacks at nearby supermarkets. Pick up the others online or at health food stores.
