Combat salt and chlorine

Everything you like about summertime―the pool, the ocean and the sun―can wreak havoc on your hair. Learn to fight back.

Get a heat treatment. Create a barrier between strands and harsh elements by applying a leave-in conditioner like Organix Hydrating Tea Tree Mint Leave-in Moisture Mist ($7; at mass retailers), says Aussie celebrity stylist Sarah Potempa. “Part hair down the middle and pull it back into a tight pony or bun,” says Bowman. “It’ll look wet and shiny―and chic!”

Repair damage. The high chlorine content in pools strips hair of protective oils, and the ocean’s saltwater draws out moisture, says Bowman. Rehydrate with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner like VitaminShampoo Hydrating Noni Berry Lemongrass shampoo and conditioner ($7; at mass retailers).

Deep clean. Chlorine and saltwater buildup can leave tresses dry and dull, so rinse away residue with a cleansing shampoo like Pantene Pro-V Clarifying shampoo ($4; at mass retailers). Look for key words such as “clarifying,” “balancing” or “anti-residue.”
