Add va-va volume

Humidity and sweat can weigh down your hair. Here are some ways to make the most of what you’ve got―whether it’s straight or wavy.

Get a clean start. Begin with a volumizing shampoo such as Nature’s Gate Organics Grapefruit & Wild Ginger shampoo ($8; at health and natural food retailers). It will get rid of residue that drags your hair down and help thicken each strand before you add styling products.

Lay off the heavy stuff. Piling on mousse, gel and hairspray one after the other will deflate volume. Use just one styler like Got2B Fat-Tastic Thickening Plumping mousse ($6; at mass retailers). Rub a large dollop through towel-dried hair, coating strands from root to tip. Avoid product buildup by using a clarifying shampoo once a week.

Lift roots. Divide hair into sections, then set in Velcro rollers. Let it air-dry (which can take up to an hour if your hair is thick) or speed up the process with a dryer on medium heat. Use with an antihumidity hairspray like Samy Professional Fast Style Designing Mist ($15; at Walgreens) before removing rollers.
