You can fix, install or repair just about anything around your home with the right collection of tools. Well-made tools last forever, so stock up before a crisis arises.

    Buy these handy extras

Auger. Clears serious drain and toilet clogs by rotating a metal bit through the clog. At $45 (Home Depot), owning is much cheaper than calling the plumber. Budget tip: Rent one by the day from your local hardware store.

Volt-Ohm Meter (VOM). Tells you whether outlets and electrical appliances are working. Cheap and incredibly useful. Sometimes called a "digital multi-meter." Budget tip: VOMs are a few dollars on Ebay.com.

Picture-hanging Kit and Cup Hooks. Ideal for hanging your newest painting, plant or mug when inspiration hits. Kits and hooks are under $2 at hardware-supply stores.

    Get a good tool box

Store all tools in a rust-resistant toolbox. Choose one that's much larger than you think you'll need -- your tool collection will expand. Try an affordable handled plastic container, like the Homz Storage "Tote 'N Go" (11" x 15") for $7.99; www.staples.com.

    Stay safe!

Don't cut corners on safety. Follow these tips.

Always wear safety goggles when using power tools.

Remove all jewelry, and tie back loose hair and clothing.

Keep all chemicals and tools stored safely away from children and according to label instructions, away from heat or flame.

Set-up ladders or steps on flat, level ground. When possible, have a partner hold the step or ladder steady while you work.

Wear gloves and thick shoes when working with chemicals or products.

Prevent falls by keeping your work space uncluttered, free of scattered tools, chemicals and spills.

    Know your tool-talk
