Give the plant a new home in the garden:
Prepare a new hole before you dig up the plant. The less
time the plant is out of the earth, the less of a shock to its
system the transplant will be.
Protect the roots when you dig up the plant. Keep as much
soil as possible around them.
Keep roots moist while the plant is out of the ground. Spray
them lightly with water or wrap them in burlap.
Place the plant in the hole, fill the hole with soil and
then water the plant well. Use a temporary barrier to shade the
plant during the first week to protect it from sun and wind.
Move a plant from a too-small container to a larger one:
Select a new pot that's about twice as large as the existing
one to ensure that you don't have to transplant it very often.
Line the bottom of the new pot with pebbles or broken
terra-cotta pieces to create drainage for the plant.
Fill the pot about a third full with potting soil and pack
it to eliminate air pockets.
Place the plant in the center of the pot and pour in enough
potting soil to cover it the roots. Pack the soil gently and water
the plant thoroughly.
